ChatGPT cancellation FAQ

ChatGPT cancellation FAQ — every common question answered.

This is the hub for every question people ask when cancelling ChatGPT: how to cancel on the web, iPhone and Android, why the cancel button sometimes hides, refunds, what happens to your chats, cancelling Pro and Team, and what to use instead. Each answer is short, practical, and based on OpenAI's published policies.

The short version

Cancel ChatGPT in the same place you subscribed — the web, the Apple App Store, or Google Play — because each system manages its own billing. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date and you keep access until the current period ends. By default there is no prorated refund, but accidental charges and certain regions have a 14-day window. Uninstalling the app never cancels the subscription. The questions below cover each of these in detail; for full step-by-step guides see how to cancel ChatGPT Plus, the refund guide, and the should I cancel? decision page.

How to cancel

Cancelling on web, iPhone and Android

Where you click depends entirely on where you first subscribed. These cover all three plus the "missing cancel button" problem.

How do I cancel ChatGPT on the web?

Sign in at chatgpt.com, open your profile menu, go to Settings, then Billing, click Cancel plan and confirm. You keep access until the end of the current billing period. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date so you are not charged again. See the full cancel on web guide.

How do I cancel ChatGPT on iPhone or iPad?

If you subscribed inside the iOS app, Apple handles the billing. Open iPhone Settings, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, select ChatGPT and tap Cancel Subscription. You can also manage it in the App Store under your profile. More detail on the cancel on iPhone guide.

How do I cancel ChatGPT on Android?

If you subscribed through the Android app, Google Play handles the billing. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, go to Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, select ChatGPT and tap Cancel subscription. See the cancel on Android guide.

Why can't I find the cancel button in ChatGPT?

If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, the cancel option will not appear in the ChatGPT web or app settings because the store manages billing. Cancel through Apple (iPhone Settings, Subscriptions) or Google Play (Subscriptions) instead. The receipt you received tells you which store processed the payment.

Can I cancel ChatGPT anytime?

Yes. ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Team are billed month-to-month or annually and can be cancelled anytime. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. You keep access until the end of the current period.

How do I cancel a ChatGPT free trial before it charges me?

If you started a trial or promotional offer, cancel it the same way you would a paid plan and at least 24 hours before the trial ends, in the place you signed up — chatgpt.com, the App Store, or Google Play. Trial terms and availability change and vary by region, so confirm the exact end date and current trial rules on OpenAI's help center or your store before relying on them.

After you cancel

Access, history and your data

Cancelling does not delete your account or your conversations. Here is exactly what changes.

What happens after I cancel ChatGPT?

You keep your paid features until the current billing period ends, then your account drops to the free tier. You do not lose your account, and you can resubscribe at any time.

Do I keep my chat history and custom GPTs after cancelling?

Yes. Cancelling moves you to the free tier but your chat history and custom GPTs are preserved on your account. Some Plus-only features for using or building GPTs may be limited until you resubscribe.

Does deleting the ChatGPT app cancel my subscription?

No. Uninstalling the app does not cancel an Apple or Google Play subscription, and you will keep being charged. You must cancel through the App Store, Google Play, or the web, depending on where you originally subscribed.

Refunds

What you can and can't get back

Refund rules depend on whether the charge was accidental, where you live, and which store processed the payment.

Will I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT?

By default OpenAI does not give prorated refunds for the unused part of a period; you keep access until the period ends. Accidental charges may be refundable if you contact support within 14 days, and users in the EU, UK and Turkey may have a 14-day cancellation right. Purchases made through Apple or Google are refunded by Apple or Google. Verify on OpenAI's help center.

How do I get a refund for an accidental ChatGPT charge?

For a web subscription, contact OpenAI support promptly and explain the accidental charge; refunds are generally considered within 14 days. If you were charged through Apple or Google, request the refund from Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google Play, because they processed the payment. See the refund guide for the exact steps.

Can I get a refund on an annual ChatGPT subscription?

By default OpenAI does not give automatic prorated refunds for the unused months of an annual plan; you keep access until the term ends. Some cases, such as accidental charges or a 14-day cancellation right in the EU, UK and Turkey, may still qualify. If you paid through Apple or Google, the refund is handled by them. Policies vary, so verify your situation on OpenAI's help center or with the relevant store.

How do I contact Apple or Google for a ChatGPT refund?

If you subscribed through the App Store, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com or in iPhone Settings under your subscriptions. If you subscribed through the Android app, use the Google Play order history or the "Report a problem" option in Play. OpenAI cannot refund store purchases, so the store that processed your payment is the right place to ask. Check Apple's and Google's current refund policies before applying.

Pro, Team and downgrading

Other plans and options

Pro and Team cancel a little differently, and you don't always have to cancel completely.

How do I cancel ChatGPT Pro?

ChatGPT Pro (around $200 per month) cancels the same way as Plus: on the web go to chatgpt.com, profile menu, Settings, Billing, Cancel plan, and confirm. You keep Pro access until the end of the paid period, then drop to free or your previous plan. See cancel Pro.

How do I cancel ChatGPT Team?

ChatGPT Team is managed by a workspace owner or admin. The admin opens the workspace settings and billing area to cancel the plan or remove seats. Individual members cannot cancel the whole Team plan; contact your workspace admin. See cancel Team.

What's the difference between downgrading and cancelling ChatGPT?

Cancelling stops your paid plan and drops you to the free tier at the end of the period. Downgrading usually means moving to a cheaper paid plan or to free. In both cases your account and history stay; the difference is whether you keep any paid features. See should I cancel?

Can I re-subscribe to ChatGPT after cancelling?

Yes. You can resubscribe at any time from chatgpt.com or the app by choosing a paid plan again. Your account, chat history and custom GPTs remain, so re-subscribing restores the paid features.

Will I pay the same price if I re-subscribe later?

Usually you re-subscribe at whatever the current advertised price is, so if OpenAI has changed pricing in the meantime your new rate may differ from your old one. There is no guaranteed lock-in of an old price after you cancel. Check the current figure on OpenAI's pricing page before resubscribing.

Is cancelling my subscription the same as deleting my ChatGPT account?

No. Cancelling only stops the paid plan and drops you to the free tier, keeping your account, chat history and custom GPTs. Deleting your account is a separate, permanent action that removes your data and is handled in account settings. If you only want to stop paying, cancel rather than delete. Confirm the current account-deletion process on OpenAI's help center.

Does cancelling ChatGPT Plus stop my OpenAI API billing?

No. The ChatGPT subscription and the OpenAI API (pay-as-you-go developer usage) are billed separately. Cancelling Plus, Pro or Team does not stop API charges, and stopping API usage does not cancel your ChatGPT plan. To end API billing, manage it in your OpenAI API account billing settings. Verify the current setup on OpenAI's help center.

Should you leave, and where to go

Value and alternatives

Before you cancel, it's worth deciding whether the free tier, a different tool, or a multi-model subscription fits better.

What are good alternatives after cancelling ChatGPT?

The free ChatGPT tier still works, and Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot are strong alternatives. MultipleChat lets you use ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in one subscription instead of paying for several separate tools. See alternatives after cancelling.

Is ChatGPT Plus worth it, or should I cancel?

ChatGPT Plus (around $20 per month) is worth it if you regularly hit free-tier limits or need the newest models and features. If you barely use it, the free tier may be enough. If you want more value, a multi-model tool like MultipleChat can replace several paid plans. Compare on free vs Plus.

Smarter than cancelling

Keep AI access for less with one subscription

Many people cancel ChatGPT because one plan feels expensive for one model. A multi-model workspace is often the better move: keep ChatGPT-style answers and add others, in one place.
