How ChatGPT refunds actually work
The single most important fact: cancelling and refunding are different things. Cancelling stops the next renewal and you keep access until the current period ends — it does not claw back a charge that already happened. Getting money back for a charge already made depends entirely on where you paid, because that decides who holds the money:
- Google Play gives you a self-serve refund button for about 48 hours after purchase. After that you ask Google/the developer, and it is discretionary.
- Apple never lets OpenAI refund an in-app purchase — you report the problem to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, generally within 90 days, and Apple decides.
- OpenAI web/card charges are refunded at OpenAI's discretion; subscription fees are generally non-refundable except where the law requires it, but a polite request soon after the charge is sometimes granted, occasionally prorated.
- EU / UK / Switzerland buyers have a 14-day right of withdrawal on distance purchases, though providers often ask you to waive it to start using the service immediately.
